How to Clean Door Hardware Without Damaging the Finish

Door-hardware finishes do not all take the same care. Schlage’s finish guide gives different instructions for coated, chrome and living finishes. Emtek’s guide recommends mild, non-abrasive detergent with a soft cloth and warns against abrasives, strong alkaline cleaners and solvents. These are manufacturer-specific examples, not universal rules.

Routine cleaning

Dust with a soft cloth, then check the exact product and finish guide before adding cleaner. Use only an approved solution and follow its rinse and drying steps. Schlage also says not to spray or immerse hardware; wipe gently rather than soaking it.

Before polishing

Avoid brass polish, wax, oil or disinfectant unless the exact finish guide allows it. A method intended for one finish may harm another. For advice on a particular handle, contact Jinnah.
