PH or PZ? Match the Screwdriver Bit to Your Hardware Fastener

A cross-shaped recess does not mean every cross-head bit will fit. PB Swiss Tools distinguishes Phillips (PH), with tapered flanks, from Pozidriv (PZ), with parallel flanks. The maker warns that mismatching these profiles can create play and damage the fastener or tool. Use the drive type and size specified by the screw maker when available. Wiha likewise recommends a matching tool profile; Wera marks its Pozidriv tools by profile and size.
Before driving
Check the packaging or installation sheet for PH or PZ and size. Match both to the bit. Test the fit before applying torque: the tip should engage firmly, not rock or slip. If it does not fit securely, stop and check the profile and size—do not force it or compensate with a smaller bit.
Protect the hardware
Keep the driver in line with the screw and apply controlled pressure. Stop if the recess begins to deform. If the screw type or size is unclear, take the fastener and fitting details to a supplier before replacing it. For guidance, contact Jinnah.
